Abdomen Liposuction by Eoin Beckett

An Overview of the Abdomen Liposuction Procedure

One of the most common of all cosmetic surgeries, the abdomen liposuction procedure recontours the body by removing fat deposits from the abdomen permanently. The accumulation of fat in the abdomen is often inherited, which means that even diet and exercise may not be enough to remove it.

It is popularly believed that most plastic surgery is carried out on and around the neck and face. However, statistics have revealed that the most common procedure is abdomen liposuction. Of course, this makes sense. Both men and women have trouble keeping off fat from the middle once they turn 40.  Exercises designed to keep the tummy fit, when they are effective at all (see above) are often time consuming and energy sapping. Fpr this reason, abdomen liposuction is often viewed as a convenient short cut.

The Benefits of Abdomen Liposuction

Liposuction is a tried and tested method of removing fat from the body. It is quick, simple, and the least invasive of all types of cosmetic surgery. One of the major benefits of abdomen liposuction is the ‘feel-good’ factor that it brings. To see an image reflected in the mirror that reflects your true self image is both good for self-confidence and for your general pwychological health.

There are further benefits. Research has shown that fat deposits around the abdomen can lead to a host of health problems such as heart disease (through cholesterol), liver problems, and diabetes.  The removal of fat from the middle can often be of great benefit. To someone suffering from such ailments, abdomen liposuction can often prove to be the safest way to remove health-threatening fat.

The Risks

Although the vast majority of liposuction operations in the United States are successful, as with any surgical procedure, there are certain risks and limitations involved.

Occasionally, a few patients may experience symptoms such as numbness, scarring, dimpling, lumpiness, discoloration, or sagging skin in the area that has been operated on. However, all these problems can be corrected with follow-up surgery.

In addition, as the skin ages it loses some of its elasticity.  This means that elder patients may not experience such positive results form abdomen liposuction as their more youthful counterparts.

More serious, and (to be fair) rare, complications include infection, loss of fluid, blood clotting, pulmonary embolism, fluid build-up in the lungs, and drug overdose.  Such problems can conceivably arise if large amounts of fat are removed with one operation, more than one surgical procedure is performed at the same time and the whole operation is performed while the patient is under general anesthesia.

Minimizing the Risks

The risks escalate when large amounts of fat are removed in one procedure. Abdomen liposuction surgery is carried out using a very small stainless steel cannula through which the fat is sucked, and when large amounts of fat are involved, the surgeon may attempt to use larger cannula to perform the surgery faster.

Because of this, it is a very good idea to remove of large areas of fat from the abdominal region through a series of short procedures rather than one long one. In this way, you will reduce the risks considerably.  Of course, it is most important that you follow all of your surgeon’s instructions, both before and after surgery.
